Royston’s well landscaped Priory Memorial Gardens have been awarded multiple Green Flag awards for their excellent use of green space. The gardens themselves are a delight, with seasonal displays of perennials, mature woodland and bedding plants, making this an attractive place to walk through or to sit and watch the world go by.
The gardens were purchased by public subscription and laid out to a design by Arthur Whydale, a local architect, in 1948. The churchyard was amalgamated with the garden in the early-1990s. Both lie within the former precinct of the medieval Roys Cross Priory. The grounds were given ‘belt’ and kitchen gardens in the late-18th century when the priory was a private residence; some of these elements were included in the mid-20th-century design.
Priory Memorial Gardens is a large attractive enclosed park surrounded by mature trees, hedging and walls. Facilities cater for young and old alike whether to enjoy family activities centred on the play areas or the park area for relaxation. The gardens have received multiple Green Flag awards.
